The Senior Enlisted Advisor, often shortened to SEA, is tasked primarily with the efficient running of the SEV Torch, ensuring standards, regulations and procedure are being met, enforcing these regulations on enlisted personnel as appropriate, and advising the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer on matters pertaining to enlisted personnel or the ship at large. The Senior Enlisted Advisor is considered one of the "big three" crew members ultimately in charge of the vessel, alongside the Executive and Commanding Officers.

The Role

The Senior Enlisted Advisor, reporting directly to the Commanding Officer and Executive Officer, is the key advisor to the CO and XO on matters of welfare, morale, personnel development, and issues among the enlisted side of the crew. In this position they ensure operational capability and address concerns on an as-needed basis.

The SEA is, by appointment, the senior most non-commissioned officer aboard the vessel and exists as a major component of the Command structure. They advise in all matters related to the efficient running of the ship, provide the CO and XO with the enlisted perspective, and bring years of experience to the table in that capacity.

Ultimately the role of SEA is a highly social, personal engagement based one. Highly dynamic in nature, it requires a good deal of initiative, knowledge of the vessel at large, and effective communication skills. You may find that in any given round you are teaching bridge officers how to act appropriately, helping the CO or XO deal with an external threat, or issuing an NJP to a very, very silly enlisted person.

Primary Responsibilities

At all times, the Senior Enlisted Advisor's duty is to ensure adherence to standards, regulations, good working practices aboard the vessel among all enlisted, and to advise officers on matters and concerns within their departments pertaining to personnel issues. They are to function as a conduit to the Executive Officer and Commanding Officer on morale, personnel, and staffing matters; specifically, they are concerned with good conduct and regulatory enforcement through ad-hoc and routine management.

Senior Enlisted Advisors aboard the Torch and other Fleet vessels regularly perform periodic tours of departments and communicate with and address staff on both sides of the Enlisted-Officer divide to identify concerns and address matters as appropriate, either directly or by communicating those concerns directly to the head of department. Other times, they will accompanying the Commanding Officer or Executive Officer when they decide to inspect departments or the crew in general (accompany them on their "rounds").

As a key member of the command team, the Senior Enlisted Advisor should regularly communicate with department heads to determine concerns and issues relating to personnel and then work on ways to address those issues. They also meet regularly with relevant enlisted personnel to discuss personal and professional development matters, including achieving goals and providing morale support.

Most importantly, the SEA ensures that the General Regulations, standards and the Executive and Commanding Officers' directives are being met and followed at all times by lower ranks. To this end they act as a conduit of information for the CO and XO, directly ensuring all directives, orders and information are passed along and understood by other crew members.

Secondary Responsibilities

  1. To represent, at formal occasions and events, all enlisted personnel in the presence of command, and accompany the Commanding Officer as they execute their duties.
  2. To provide, in conjunction with the XO, advice on staffing matters, personnel and organizational issues, and channel specific incidents and relevant matters to their appropriate department staff as needed.
  3. To act, in a general capacity, as the personal representative of either the Commanding Officer or the Executive Officer as required in order to ensure the smooth running of operations.
  4. To attend to the development of junior officers through advisement, training, instruction and corrective action to ensure they learn to and are capable of carrying out their duties as officers properly. This specifically pertains to bridge officers and others graded at O-1 or O-2, though can rarely extend to O-3's.

OOC Notes

From an OOC standpoint, the SEA acts as the primary "milrp" coach aboard the vessel, responsible for ensuring that newer (mainly Fleet) players are corrected on their uniform and grooming standards as well as teaching people about how to act as a believable military character. With that being said, their role is very much an IC one and has a number of regular duties on board.

Do note, however, that this is not a license for the SEA to be an unmitigated dick to other players. The purpose of the job is to facilitate role-play, not to ruin another player's round because their character is consciously a bit lax with regards to uniform standards. Keep in mind that the Expeditionary Corps commonly ignores such regulations, and players who choose to join the EC are likely not looking to have their character's slightly lackadaisical behavior turned into a three-hour shouting match. Unless the behavior in question is particularly egregious, SEA players should attempt to focus their attention on Fleet characters - and, even then, keep in mind that there is a point at which drill-sergeant behavior goes from "an entertaining way to explain military regulations and behaviors on board the ship" to "pretty much just griefing".

Support the CO/XO, provide advice to them, know the regulations, know the uniform and grooming standards, represent them and carry out tasks as-needed, communicate issues from lower ranks to the CO and XO, advise department heads on matters of policy, do your best to ensure the smooth running of the ship.
